The Farm and Ranch Guide reports that farmers tuned into and participated in many listening sessions regarding the 2012 Farm Bill, noting that safety and security offered by crop insurance was a main concern.
The Guide notes that official Senate hearings held in 2012 have focused mainly on Energy and Rural Development for rural communities while others were related to stronger conservation efforts as well as CSP and EQIP programs initiated through the farm bill.
"Crop insurance provides a public good to our nation and consumers all over the world," said Erik Younggren, president of the National Association of Wheat Growers. "By helping ensure the stability of U.S. farmers, the government is helping to ensure a stable food supply – a necessary government responsibility."
Farmers throughout the country, including those in Virginia, have expressed concern that the bill will be written under pressure of a reduced federal budget. The progress of the bill will reportedly see action either before or directly after the presidential election in November.
